Employment protection and workers' rights in Norway

What the law guarantees, how unions fit in, and the limits of what we can verify.

In short: Norwegian employees are protected by law on written contracts, notice (one month by default, longer with seniority), sick pay (employer pays 16 days, then NAV), working hours and overtime. Union membership is voluntary and collective agreements play a major role in pay.

Law, collective agreement, contract, practice: the law sets the floor; a collective agreement can improve it (and in some cases adjust it); your individual contract can only improve on both; "market practice" is not binding. Sunday, public-holiday and night-work rules are not summarised here: see Arbeidstilsynet. The Lovdata text is an unofficial translation, the Norwegian text prevails; holiday-pay accrual is under review by ESA. Not legal advice.
