First steps after you get the job

  1. Tax deduction card: required to work in Norway. Your employer can apply for it (form RF-1355). You must attend an ID check at a tax office first; then it usually takes up to four working days. Until it exists your employer must deduct 50 per cent tax.
  2. D-number / national identity number: a D-number becomes inactive five years after it was assigned and must then be reactivated, usually through an ID check.
  3. Report your move to Norway and get an electronic ID for public online services.
  4. Read your written contract against the Law tab before the first day.

Work life

NATIONAL Official statistics Source: SSB 11658, NAV, Arbeidstilsynet · Data: 2026

What can be measured today: average contractual working time is 29.4 hours per week across all employees (this includes part-time work); legal maximum normal hours are 40 per week; paid holiday is 25 working days; employer-paid sick pay is 16 days, then NAV. The Law tab has the sources.

Culture, hierarchy, work-life balance, integration of foreigners: these are not published here yet. They need surveys from official institutions and clearly labelled worker reports, and we will not present anecdotes as statistics.

Myths & FAQ

"Job ads show salary." Not in the NAV feed: see SSB wages on the Pay tab.
